    A Functional Approach to FBSDEs and Its Application in Optimal Portfolios

    In Liang et al (2009), the current authors demonstrated that BSDEs can be reformulated as functional differential equations, and as an application, they solved BSDEs on general filtered probability spaces. In this paper the authors continue the study of functional differential equations and demonstrate how such approach can be used to solve FBSDEs. By this approach the equations can be solved in one direction altogether rather than in a forward and backward way. The solutions of FBSDEs are then employed to construct the weak solutions to a class of BSDE systems (not necessarily scalar) with quadratic growth, by a nonlinear version of Girsanov's transformation. As the solving procedure is constructive, the authors not only obtain the existence and uniqueness theorem, but also really work out the solutions to such class of BSDE systems with quadratic growth. Finally an optimal portfolio problem in incomplete markets is solved based on the functional differential equation approach and the nonlinear Girsanov's transformation.Comment: 26 page

    Efficient Embedded Speech Recognition for Very Large Vocabulary Mandarin Car-Navigation Systems

    Automatic speech recognition (ASR) for a very large vocabulary of isolated words is a difficult task on a resource-limited embedded device. This paper presents a novel fast decoding algorithm for a Mandarin speech recognition system which can simultaneously process hundreds of thousands of items and maintain high recognition accuracy. The proposed algorithm constructs a semi-tree search network based on Mandarin pronunciation rules, to avoid duplicate syllable matching and save redundant memory. Based on a two-stage fixed-width beam-search baseline system, the algorithm employs a variable beam-width pruning strategy and a frame-synchronous word-level pruning strategy to significantly reduce recognition time. This algorithm is aimed at an in-car navigation system in China and simulated on a standard PC workstation. The experimental results show that the proposed method reduces recognition time by nearly 6-fold and memory size nearly 2- fold compared to the baseline system, and causes less than 1% accuracy degradation for a 200,000 word recognition task

    Market Frictions, Governance and Economic Rents: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead

    This paper develops a more unified organizational economics theory within Strategy. We begin with perfectly competitive markets derived from the first fundamental welfare theorem of economics, and develop a parsimonious typology of market frictions. We show how two primary questions in Strategy--why firms exist and why some firms outperform others--can be evaluated from this market frictions logic. Building on this logic enables more systematic explanations and predictions concerning governance structures and economic rents in Strategy research.
